Types of Damage That Would Require Tarping
Fire-related disasters can cause various types of damage that need to be addressed promptly to minimize further harm and restore your property to its pre-loss condition. When searching for a restoration company to help you recover from fire damage, it’s crucial to find and work with a company experienced in all aspects of fire damage restoration. Otherwise, you might need to search for additional contractors to complete the job.
Roof Damage
Fires can severely damage or destroy sections of the roof, leaving the property exposed to weather elements. Tarping these areas is essential to prevent water damage and other environmental impacts.
Structural Openings
Structural damage from fires often results in exposed areas in roofs, walls, or ceilings, making the property vulnerable to external conditions and unauthorized entry. Tarping these openings provides an immediate barrier to secure and protect the property.
Smoke Damage
Smoke and soot damage is much more serious than you would think. Smoke carries soot and odors to every corner of your property, moving through your ducting to areas untouched by the fire damage, requiring significant effort to clean.
The Tarping Process
Initial Assessment
- Inspection: Conduct a thorough inspection of the property to identify areas that require tarping.
- Documentation: Document the extent of the damage with photos and notes for insurance and restoration purposes.
Safety Measures
- Ensure Safety: Make sure the area is safe for work, checking for structural stability and potential hazards.
- Protective Gear: Workers should wear appropriate protective gear, including helmets, gloves, and safety harnesses if necessary.
Preparation
- Clear Debris: Remove any loose debris, ash, or other obstructions from the damaged area to ensure a secure application of the tarp.
- Measure and Cut: Measure the areas needing coverage and cut tarps to the appropriate size, allowing extra material for secure attachment.
Securing the Tarp
- Placement: Position the tarp over the damaged area, ensuring it covers the entire exposed section with some overlap to prevent water infiltration.
- Fastening: Secure the tarp using nails, screws, or adhesive strips, and reinforce with wooden planks or battens where necessary.
- Sealing Edges: Ensure all edges are tightly sealed and fastened to prevent wind from lifting the tarp and to keep out rain and debris.
Inspection and Adjustment
- Check Stability: Inspect the tarp to ensure it is securely fastened and that there are no gaps or loose sections.
- Adjust as Needed: Make any necessary adjustments to ensure the tarp remains secure and provides adequate protection.
Monitoring
- Regular Checks: Periodically check the tarp for any signs of wear, damage, or displacement, especially after strong winds or heavy rain.
- Maintenance: Perform maintenance as needed to keep the tarp in place until permanent repairs can be made.
